Pentecostal Sunday 2016Fountain of Peace welcomes you to this year Pentecost Sunday; Holy Spirit Feast of Supoernatural Renewal and Refreshment

Brief History of Pentecost Sunday

For Christians, Pentecost is a holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus.  Pentecost origin began when God led the children of Israel out of Egypt by asking them to celebrate the Feast of the Passover on the night of their departure, which He instructed them to observe every year in commemoration of their liberation from bondage and their departure from Egypt.

Fifty days later, in their journey through the wilderness, they arrived at Mount Sinai, where God gave them the Law, through Moses. God commanded them to observe this annually also, in commemoration of that giving of the Law, which is the fiftieth day after the Feast of the Passover. Thus, the English word “Pentecost” is from the Greek word pentekostos, which means “fifty.” It comes from the ancient Christian expression pentekoste hemera, which means “fiftieth day.

But, the Jews called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks – Ex. 23:16, Ex. 24, Lev. 23:16, Num. 28 and Deut. 16. It was the celebration of the beginning of the early weeks of harvest. Pentecost was the celebration of the beginning of the early wheat harvest, which meant that Pentecost and this fell sometime during the middle of the month of May or sometimes in early June. There three key features of the Feast of Pentecost, which will help in explaining the mystery of the Book of Acts 2, and they are:

  1. Pentecost was a pilgrim festival. According to the Jewish Law, Jewish men would travel to Jerusalem to personally attend the celebration.
  2. Pentecost was a holiday. No work was to be done. School was out. The shops were closed. It was celebration time.
  3. Pentecost involves certain rituals. Certain liturgical rituals were prescribed in the Law for the day of Pentecost; where the High Priest was to take two loaves of freshly baked wheat bread and offer them before the Lord. The wheat bread was made from the newly harvested wheat.

FOP CongregationThe Effect of Pentecost

We are meant to live in the presence and power of the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit helps us to confess Jesus as Lord (1 Cor 12:3), empowers us to serve God with supernatural power (1 Cor 12:4-11), binds us together as the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:12-13), helps us to pray (Rom 8:26), and even intercedes for us with God the Father (Rom 8:27). The Spirit guides us (Gal 5:25), helping us to live like Jesus (Gal 5:22-23).
